The Ukrainian government must introduce legislation to address discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity following a number of attacks on individuals, Amnesty International said in a report published today.

International rights groups are concerned by recent statements from the Czech Government, indicating it would not abolish practical schools, and would continue operating pre-school education (kindergardens) and preparatory classes under the practical schools system. The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC), Open Society Justice Initiative (OSJI) and Amnesty International (AI) believe that these recent statements undermine the commitment made in the Government’s Strategy for Combating Social Exclusion for 2011-2015 and the government is backtracking from its promises.

Saturday’s attack against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) activists in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, yet again underscores the urgent need for protection in law against homophobic and transphobic violence and any other form of discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity, said Amnesty International today.

Amnesty International condemns the forced eviction of Roma families from an informal settlement at Vidikovac in Čukarica municipality in Belgrade. The forced eviction, which began on 22 April and continued the following day, was carried out by the Belgrade city authorities and Čukarica municipal authorities, with complete disregard for Serbia’s international and regional human rights obligations. |

DECISIVE ACTION NEEDED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION When it comes to the treatment of the Roma, EU governments are not just failing to respect binding international human rights standards, but also to enforce EU anti-discrimination law. EU anti-discrimination laws have been in place for over a decade but EU governments continue to adopt discriminatory policies that target the Roma and allow discrimination to go unchecked.
