9 Dec 2010
Presentation of the Fight Discrimination Campaign at the FRA conference, 7 December 2010 @Daniele Zannoni for Amnesty InternationalOn 7-8 December Amnesty International ran a stall at the Annual Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) conference in Brussels, which focussed on particularly vulnerable children and delivering child-friendly justice in the European Union. Amnesty International's staff presented its Fight Discrimination in Europe campaign highlighting its work to promote the right to education and right to housing for Romani children, and the End Female Genital Mutilation campaign (END FGM), pointing out at the impact on the lives of girl children who are genitally mutilated. The cases of segregation in education of Romani children in Slovakia, and forced evictions in Romania were presented during the "Marketplace of Idea" session, where all the exposing organisations had the chance of highlighting their work and call for action. Signatures to postcards on right to housing for Roma in Italy and right to education for Roma in Slovakia were collected at the stall. The FRA conference aimed at developing practical proposes to address challenges faced by particularly vulnerable children in realising their rights and to ensure that primary consideration is given to the best interest of the child in judicial and administrative matters concerning children; sharing good practice on child-friendly approaches; and strengthening impact by promoting an integrated and evidence-based approach to the implementation of policies and strategies related to the rights of the child in the EU.
